Who is this user you call “average.”

When RCA mass produces an $89 pocket camcorder with built in software
for managing, editing, and sharing videos, it better be easy to use.

Everything from soup to nuts.

We were lucky enough to be tasked with everything on this project – starting with customer research and finishing with final packaging. It was one of those rare occasions when everyone on the team got to collaborate, from designers to techies, and we loved every minute of it. We have to admit it’s rather cool to see the results of your work hanging in every Walmart across the country.

Chicken scratches are a good place to start.

Sometimes a project timeline is so tight and there’s so much to figure out, you just need to start simple, and it doesn’t get much more simple than a hand-drawn sketch. From there we wire-framed, we ran some informal usability tests, and then we did it all again until we’d developed a user interface that would work for even the most amateur videographer around.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to be good.

Users of the Small Wonder camcorder needed an application that was literally self-explanatory. There was no user guide or help files, just a plug-in and get-started PC app. What we developed was quite simple, yet it helped the product gain rave reviews in the marketplace.
